Refining a segment

To apply a refinement query to the contacts in a segment, do the following:

  1. In the Summary panel, positioned to the right of the New segment or Edit segment page, click Refine your selection.
The Refinements controls display in the main panel. See Segment Summary panel for more details.
  2. Select the system generated refinement Name and enter one of your choice.
  3. Enter the Number of contacts that you want the refinement to select.
  4. Under Narrowed to, select the radio button that corresponds with the contacts you want to identify:
    • Top
The contacts in the segment who have performed the action you will define in the next step the most.
    • Least
The contacts in the segment who have performed the action you will define in the next step the least.
  5. Under By, click the downwards pointing arrow to the right of the box, and select the appropriate action, for example Spending level.
  6. Under Time frame, select when the digital message action should have taken place.
    Three options are available:

    • Anytime.
The action can have taken place at any time. No further options are displayed.
    • In date range.
Click the Calendar icon in each box and define the date range.
The action must have taken place:

      • After the first date.
Only the first date field should be completed.
      • Before the second date.
Only the second date field should be completed.
      • Between two dates.
Both date fields should be completed.
    • In last…
The action must have taken place in the defined time period.

      1. Enter a numeric value in the first box, for example, 3.
      2. Click the downwards pointing arrow to the right of the second box, and select days, weeks, months, or years.

See Time frame conditions for more about time frames.

  7. When you are finished, click Add to apply the refinement to the segment, or Cancel to abort the process.
The refinement is added to the Summary panel and the RESULTS box is updated accordingly.

IMPORTANT:
If you do not click Save once you have finished creating or editing the segment, the refinement is discarded.
